Ideal for:
This course is open only to those with a knowledge of bookbinding and working with leather (ideally following our previous bookbinding classes). NOT SUITABLE FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Course description:
This is a three to five days course which will teach full leather binding in the 18th Century French style of bookbinding. You will make a leather bound book through a series of progressive steps designed to provide a good working knowledge of traditional bookbinding materials
and techniques.

Course content:
This course focus on sewing a multi-sectioned book with raised cords, beating, end papers construction, edge trimming, lacing on boards. You will also learn leather working with a paring knife and spokeshave, and other preparation of leather to cover your book - this includes tool preparation and paring techniques and how to trim the leather accurately.

You will also be taught Edge decoration techniques, headbanding, board attachment and some blind and gold tooling techniques.

Learning outcome:
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• select and use appropriate materials
• sew a multi-sectioned binding with raised-cords
• lace on boards
• sew multi-coloured endbands
• pare leather accurately
• make a complete full leather 18th Century Binding from start to finish
