Good eye/hand coordination and good dexterity are necessary for this course as sharp knives are used in the cutting of board and paper.
You will be shown correct procedure in the use of these tools but good co-ordination will assure accurate cutting and prevention of injury.
Closed in shoes MUST be worn at all times.
This is an intensive workshop, which will teach Fine Binding techniques, including preparing a book for the application of a full piece of leather to the cover. You will make a bound book through a series of progressive steps that are designed to provide good working knowledge of traditional binding, materials and techniques.
Participants will complete a full leather binding with decorative end papers. You will focus on techniques known as rounding and backing, as well as sewing a multi-sectioned book on cords with a sewing frame. This style has the same basic structure as most Western books produced from the 1400s up until the start of mass-produced cased books. You will also be introduced to simple blind tooling.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• work with a paring knife
• be taught how to prepare leather for use in covering books
• how to trim the leather accurately
• how to attach the boards and the paper cover
• be introduced to blind tooling
