Only those who have completed a Beginners and Intermediate course.
This is an intensive course which will teach Fine Binding techniques - preparing a book for the application of half leather - leather spine and decorated paper cover. You will make a bound book through a series of progressive steps, designed to provide a good working knowledge of traditional bookbinding materials and techniques.
You will focus on techniques known as rounding and backing, sewing a multi-sectioned book, end papers construction, , edge trimming, making a hollow for the spine, how to pleat corners and set joints lining.
This course will demonstrate leather working with a paring knife you will be taught to prepare your leather for covering - this includes tool preparation and paring techniques, how to trim the leather accurately, attach the boards and cover paper.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
• select and use appropriate materials
• sew a multi-sectioned binding with hemp cords
• round and back a spine
• pare leather accurately
• make a complete half leather fine Binding from start to finish
All materials and tools are supplied at the Bindery
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be supplied. There will be tea breaks and lunch which you are welcome to bring with you or there are cafes and markets nearby.
