This style of binding, known as "Der Gebrochener Rücken," is a variant of the German case binding technique called "Bradel." It's often hailed as the quintessential German binding structure due to its precision and adaptability to various needs and aesthetic considerations. It can be executed either "in boards" or as a case binding.
One of the notable features of this binding style is its flexibility in using different covering materials on the spine and boards. While both options can accommodate thicker books, they excel particularly when applied to smaller books.
What distinguishes it from other case bindings is the method of joining the cover boards and spine stiffener with a strip of sturdy paper before covering. This meticulous approach allows for precise fitting of the covers to the textblock, especially at the joint and fore-edge. Books employing this structure are typically covered in full cloth, paper, or other suitable materials.

This class is rated Level 1 in our course programme. As such it is NOT beginner-friendly.
Level 1 courses focus on traditional bookbinding and after 1A and 1B, does not have to be taken consecutively.
This is a very technical workshop which requires a high level of capability and confidence in using sharp instruments and being able to follow verbal instructions is expected. You will need to have completed at lease one of our Level 1 courses (1A or 1B) or already have good bookbinding skills, especially in sewing a multiple section book.
