A Day in the life of a Bookbinder: Bindery Tour
Owl and Lion Bindery, 193 / 392 Jones Street, Ultimo
Tuesday 21st October 2025
12:00 – 1:00 pm
PLEASE NOTE: ONLY individual booking are accepted. ONE ticket per person.
Ever wondered what a bookbinder actually does? What goes into making a book? Or how a much-loved, battered old volume can be brought back to life?
Join us for a special open-bindery event that lifts the curtain on the magical (and surprisingly hands-on) world of bookbinding.
You’ll discover examples of both traditional and modern techniques, from fine leather bindings to quirky artist books, from restoration to playful sketchbooks. Bookbinders do far more than simply “make books”: they preserve history, repair treasures, and create objects of beauty to be cherished for generations.
Chat with a professional bookbinder about her work, training, and favourite projects, over a cup of tea and biscuits.
Explore a variety of bindings, materials, and tools (yes, you can smell the leather and handle the marbled paper!).
Watch a live gold-finishing demonstration.
This event is presented as part of the Sydney Rare Book Week 2025 program. The program concludes with the Sydney Rare Book Fair at the State Library of NSW, from Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 October 2025.
Please notify us of cancellations.
