Coptic Binding or the Medieval 'Slinky' 25th June 2026

$150.00

Time: 5.45 - 7.45
Cost:
$150

The Copts, early Christians from Egypt, first developed this bookbinding method in the 2nd century AD. The most common form of the Coptic stitch uses thread to bind multiple folded sheets of paper together with a chain stitch, a technique renowned for its flexibility, durability, and the ability to allow books to lie completely flat when open.

The model we teach is a streamlined adaptation of a medieval binding, reduced to its ancient, essential components: paper, linen, and wood.

These elements are sewn directly onto handmade paper and Australian hardwood boards, specially commissioned for this series. The result is a refined technique that creates a binding that is not only durable and highly flexible but also beautifully sculptural in appearance.

Please note:

  • All materials and tools required for the workshop.

  • Unlimited tea, coffee, and biscuits; because tea is important and cake is de rigueur.

  • Please review our Terms and Conditions carefully before booking. Refunds are not permitted for change of mind.
