Join our next class on the 18th May 2025 - 2 places left
New class *5th July*
Time: 10am - 1.30pm
Cost: $200 Full Fee
Wild Binders Refresher Practice from $110
Case-binding is one of the most widely used bookbinding styles and forms the foundation for understanding book structure and material handling. It’s also a prerequisite for many traditional binding techniques. With its balance of strength and versatility, case-binding is the method behind most commercial hardcover books you’ll find on the shelf.
Perfect for journals, sketchbooks, or artists’ books, these handmade creations are sure to become cherished possessions.
At Owl & Lion Bindery, we teach both flat-back and rounded-back case-binding styles, using a range of materials including cloth, decorative paper, and leather.
This particular workshop focuses on the flat-back style; bound in a cloth and paper cover, this style ideal for journals and notebooks, especially those intended for daily writing. By the end of class, you’ll walk away with a beautifully bound, sturdy book crafted entirely by your own hands.
It doesn’t matter whether you begin with the Flat (1.01) or Rounded (1.02) Case-binding technique; start with whichever suits you best. However, completion of both classes is required before moving on to leather case-binding.
In this class, you’ll learn:
Multiple-section sewing techniques
Creating and shaping the spine
Making a hardcover case
Covering with book cloth
Casing in your book
Tipping in endpapers
Please Note:
This class is suitable for those who can follow verbal and visual instructions and have basic crafting skills such as cutting, folding, and measuring.
While not required, completing the Introduction to Bookbinding: Chunky Journal class is recommended to build foundational skills before joining this session.
All materials and tools are provided, along with tea, coffee, and biscuits.
Please review our Terms and Conditions carefully before booking, as refunds are not available for change of mind.
