Private Paper Marbling Masterclass - January 2026
Date: 16th January 2026, 23rd January
Time: 10am - 3pm (includes set up and clean up)
Cost: $600 EOI waitlist
Marbling is the art of floating colours on a gelatinous size, manipulating them with rakes, combs, or a stylus, and then transferring the resulting pattern onto paper that has been treated with a mordant to help the colours adhere.
The history of marbling is a little imprecise—much was lost during the upheavals of the Middle Ages—but we know that marbling was practiced in 15th-century Persia (known as abri) and in the Ottoman Empire (called ebru) around the same time. It is believed to have travelled west from Japan along the Silk Road, reaching Europe, where it flourished during the Italian Renaissance with the rise of printing. Marbling remains a cherished part of book production to this day.
What you will learn in this Masterclass:
In this masterclass, you will learn hands-on, step-by-step marbling techniques. From making the size and mixing the paints, to preparing paper and creating traditional patterns, Isabelle will demonstrate and guide you through at least ten classic marbling designs.
You’ll receive detailed recipes for the size, paints, and mordant, along with a materials list and some supplies to take home.
This intimate class is limited to just four students.
The first part of the day is intensive, packed with demonstrations and hands-on learning.
In the second part, you'll settle into your own rhythm; experimenting, playing, and perfecting your technique, with guidance always on hand.
Please Note:
Suitable for those who can follow verbal and visual instructions and have basic crafting skills such as cutting, folding, and measuring.
All materials and tools are provided, along with tea, coffee, and biscuits.
Please review our Terms and Conditions carefully before booking, as refunds are not available for change of mind.
